George Hotz is still hard at it, hacking the Sony Playstation 3, this time, he goes a little more into detail as to what he has done, and where this is going. The beginning of the post, he stresses the against the use of piracy, and what to and what not to expect. [Read More]
Apparently so. A guy by the name of George Hotz (Geohot), who is also known for the famous iPhone Jailbreak hack, has now moved onto bigger and better things. The Playstation 3. The PS3 has been around now roughly 3 years, without any true exploits. Now that is all about to change.

I have read/write access to the entire system memory, and HV level access to the processor. In other words, I have hacked the PS3. The rest is just software. And reversing. I have a lot of reversing ahead of me, as I now have dumps of LV0 and LV1. I’ve also dumped the NAND without removing it or a modchip.
3 years, 2 months, 11 days…thats a pretty secure system
Took 5 weeks, 3 in Boston, 2 here, very simple hardware cleverly applied, and some not so simple software.
Shout out to George Kharrat from iPhoneMod Brasil for giving me this PS3 a year and a half ago to hack. Sorry it took me so long
As far as the exploit goes, I’m not revealing it yet. The theory isn’t really patchable, but they can make implementations much harder. Also, for obvious reasons I can’t post dumps. I’m hoping to find the decryption keys and post them, but they may be embedded in hardware. Hopefully keys are setup like the iPhone’s KBAG.
A lot more to come…follow @geohot on twitter

Rockstar Games and GameStop have teamed up to offer an exclusive for the upcoming game Red Dead Redemption for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.
Players can vote to choose an outfit that will be earned by completing a set of in-game challenges. Once the challenges are completed and the outfit is unlocked, the outfit will uniquely affect how the surrounding world responds to the game?s main man, John Marston.
?We?re privileged to have fans that are just as passionate about our games as we are,? said Alex Moulle-Berteaux, head of marketing for Rockstar Games. ?Having fans choose their own pre-order bonus is a unique way to let them be a part of Red Dead Redemption.?
During January, new information about the challenges, outfits, and the effect it has in-game will be revealed.
Game?s out in April.

Though no prices have been released yet, Playstation 3 owners can expect to start paying for a subscription for their PSN network. First, for online game play, that will stay free, thankfully. What you’re going to be getting is a “service offering” that offers premium content and services that you would not be able to receive in the free subscription. [Read More]
In some exciting news for PS3 owners, current rumors are that Playstation will be porting Firefox to the PS3 gaming console. This was informed by a secret source to PlayStation Insider (Sony has talked to Mozilla about porting Firefox to the PS3).
Many users who frequently use the PS3 browser, why I really don’t know why, have complained about the performance and usability of the browser.
Given this is just a rumor, don’t put to much hope into it, until we all see a nice beta build of this. Which of course, PlayStation most likely won’t let the end users ever see.
Just got the Netflix email saying the disc should be here today. That’s great news. Time to get some pop corn, and watch a movie.

Netflix has just started to ship the instant streaming disc for the many PS3 owners out there. The streaming disc will allow PlayStation 3 owners, to stream netflix on demand, via the use of the disc, that is required.
Quoted from the Netflix blog

For all the PlayStation 3 fans out there, the PS3 slim is now available in the 250gb model. The 250GB Slim will put you back around 349.00, which includes 1 six axis controller. Lucky for me, since I’m running Windows 7 RTM, I found out that Window Media Player 12, support the m2ts HD file format for streaming to my PS3. In the past, I always used Tversity, Twonky Media, etc. But the days of that are gone my friends. Overall, didn’t find any issues in streaming HD content, looked just as good, and hey, it’s free. No more searching on warez-bb.org or anything.
Now, one thing that always helps is having a 1000mb connection from my box to the PS3. Having this, no matter what program you’re using to stream, really cuts down on any buffering issues you might see, when compared to streaming the same video or wireless, or even a 100mb connection.
It’s been rumored that Sony is going to announce in the next couple of days that the PlayStation PS3 is going to be not only getting a price cut, but also a possible Blu-ray drive cut, according to Mike Hickey, an analyst at Janco Partners.
?We think the company needs to reduce the current price by $100 to effectively restart unit velocity at retail,? Hickey said in a research note quoted by Edge. ?We believe the market is expecting a PS3 price cut in April or by June.? Hickey went on to point out that removing the Blu-ray drive would be one way for Sony to easily trim production costs. But this approach is unlikely.
Which makes me ask the question, what is the point in having a PS3 if it doesn’t have the beloved Blu-ray drive. Not only for games, but being able to watch those crystal clear movies in full 1080P. I understand completely that Sony needs to stay competitive in today’s market, but having two variations with the PS3 is just suicide.
First, you’re going to see more limited games for your specific console. Some games will be released for the Blu-ray version, while others are released on the DVD version of the PS3.
Secondly, for all the gamers who purchase the cheaper version, what happens to them for the game selection. Are the game developers going to release all the older PS3 games in the non Blu-ray version. Most likely not! It’s just going to split the Sony’s PS3 user base, and possibly frustrate their fans depending on what side of the fence they’re playing on.
I’ve always been a devoted Sony customer, from purchasing the Sony PS3 60 gig model, to my older two Sony HD’s and my more recent Sony 46 Z series Bravia TV. But if Sony does go through with this, I will be completely disappointed. There’s many other ways to cut cost in today’s market. From the materials they use to how it’s manufactured. Cutting the price by removing hardware and screwing the fan base is just non-sense Sony!
Let’s just hope this analyst doenst know what the hell he’s talking about!
